pet portrait commissions
I create hand-drawn, lifelike portraits of beloved companions. Here’s what you need to know about the process.
step 1: style & size
First, you will need to select a portrait style and size. Pastel pencil portraits are highly detailed, hyper realistic drawings. Watercolor brush pens are a less detailed, loose paint style. If you’re unsure which style you want, view the gallery for examples.
Multiple pets in a single portrait: Prices listed are for one pet in a portrait. If you are interested in multiple pets in a single portrait, contact me to request a quote.
Mat & frame: I use white mats and offer a basic selection of frames. If a specialty frame is requested, the cost will increase based on the frame price.
Shipping: If shipping is required, additional cost will apply based on location. Due to fragile glass, I do not ship framed artwork.
step 2: reference photo (Say treeeats!)
I work from photographs, so it is important for you to supply high quality photos of the pet, with good lighting on the face especially. The more detail in the eyes and face I can see, the more I am able to capture in the portrait. The better the photo, the better the drawing! I understand that some of your pets are sadly no longer with us, but I will do my best to work with the photographs you have.
Photo tips:
A photo taken up-close and in natural lighting outdoors is ideal. If indoors, have the animal face a window so natural light is on the pet’s face.
Get down on the pet’s level when taking the photo, rather than being above it.
Do not use “portrait” mode on your phone. This can create blurred areas and reduce the crisp clarity of the photo.
Do not add any filters to the photo. It’s best if I can see the true coloring of the pet.
Feel free to email me multiple photos and I can help determine which would result in the best portrait. (Please don’t reduce the photo size / resolution when sending. I want the big, high resolution files!) My email is: angelina@artbystudioa.com
step 3: book your portrait
The next step is to contact me and pay the $100 deposit (non-refundable) — via venmo — to secure your spot on my calendar. The remaining payment is collected once the portrait is complete.
I usually have a 3-6 month waiting list, depending on the time of year, so please keep that in mind if you need the portrait completed by a certain date. If you have a closer deadline, I will do my best to accommodate.
FOLLOW ME ON INSTAGRAM: I often record time-lapse videos while working on portraits, which can be viewed on my instagram page.
